More than 250 participate in Twin County United Way Day of Caring

Local nonprofits to benefit from volunteer service

LEWIS-CLARK VALLEY – It will be hard to miss Twin County United Way volunteers today.  Not only are more than 250 out in the community, but they are sporting bright orange T-shirts.  Today is the Twin County United Way’s annual Day of Caring.  Eighteen volunteer teams from local businesses and groups will provide a half-day of volunteer service on more than 26 projects for local nonprofits.

Teams range in size from two to 42.  “Many of these teams participate year after year,” said Lezley Dammon, who leads the effort to match the teams of volunteers with nonprofits in need of service. “Day of Caring allows our volunteers, many of whom are also donors, to see first-hand the work the nonprofits they support do every day. The volunteers are always amazed at the impact they make and are excited to come back,” Dammon added.

Presenting sponsor Regence BlueShield of Idaho is one of the organizations eager to help again this year. “Each year, our employees ask about this event.  It is something they look forward to participating in.  As a company, we know that giving back to the community with both time and resources is important to the overall health of the community.  We know that by supporting the local United Way, we are doing just that,” said Regence President, Scott Kreiling.

Volunteers are participating in a range of projects.  Among the many activities taking place today, volunteers will be landscaping at the Boys & Girls Clubs in Lapwai; cleaning, stacking and sorting for Community Action Partnership; repackaging food for the Idaho Foodbank and painting bowls for the YWCA’s annual fundraiser.

The day begins and ends at the Lewiston Community Center.  At 8 a.m., volunteers gather at the Center to pick up T-shirts and instructions before heading out across Nez Perce and Asotin counties.  After projects are completed, volunteers are invited back to the Community Center for a thank-you lunch with pizza from Fazzari’s and drinks from Idaho Beverage.

The United Way was established in Lewiston in 1950 and became the Twin County United Way (TCUW) in 1973.
