United Way @ work
August 2011

August is definitely here as the warm weather has finally hit and is staying strong, the back to school advertising and summer sales are hot, and the NFL training camps have official started! In addition to those activities we are gearing up to kick off this year's 2011 - 2012 TCUW Annual Campaign which will be held later this month. It will be a great kick-off and we hope that all of you can join us. See below for details!

I recently read an article from Nnamdi Asomugha, NFL All-Pro Cornerback about his experience with the United Way (UW). Nnamdi has been involved for a longtime with the UW by encouraging kids to stay in school. He made a comment in his recent article that really stuck with me. He states "change won't happen unless people like you & me lend a hand". He is absolutely right. While he is referring directly about his work, his comment applies to the work that we do as well. It takes all of us lending a hand together in order to make things happen, not one person here or one person there. Our community has many needs and by being a part of the TCUW, I know that I am able to help with each of those needs by donating financially and volunteering my time. It is an awesome feeling to know that I've helped to make a difference in our community and how it touched someone's life. It is also very rewarding to share what I have learned from the TCUW with my family & friends and to teach my children on the value of our community and volunteering within it. With all of us doing our part, the impact to our community will be substantial and very rewarding!

I am truly amazed by the generosity of our community and the collaborative effort that keeps the valley such a great place to live and work. So please remember that your donations and your time volunteering for TCUW, makes a very positive impact on your community.

Thank you!!

Recruiting Loaned Executives
09 LE Team
Each year, Loaned Executives (LE) are a vital component of our strategy.   LE's enthusiastically share the messages of our agencies to businesses and employees across the valley.

Our LE program provides an opportunity for companies to offer their employees a unique learning experience.  LE's receive training that develops organizational and public speaking skills and provides a unique networking experience in the business community.

Our goals couldn't be met without our Loaned Executives.  LE training will be conducted at Lewis Clark State College on August 17th. Click here for more details on how to get involved.

Success Story From the Field:

The Boys and Girls Club of the LC Valley

Samantha is 11 years old and has been a Club member for 6 years.  She has an older brother who is 15 and an older sister who is 13.  Her dad was killed in a car wreck when she was very young, and she lives with her mom who doesn't have a job and has been in and out of jail many times. When her mother goes to jail, Samantha lives with her Grandma and Grandpa until she gets out.  Samantha has told me that she wishes she could have a different mom because she is never there for her and doesn't take good care of her.  She told me that her mom smokes pot every day and so do her older brother and sister.  Samantha says that her brother and his friends will try to get her to smoke pot with them.  When she says no, they just keep asking her and don't take no for an answer.  Her brother will cook meals for everybody in the house except her because she won't smoke with them, so most of the time she eats cereal or sandwiches.  Samantha loves coming to the Boys and Girls Club because she knows it's a safe place for her to be where she won't have to be surrounded by the bad things that are going on at home.  She knows that there are people at the Club who care about her and will help her when she needs it.  We started a new program at the Club called Go On.  It is a program to help kids 11 and older start learning about college.  The program demonstrates to her that she can go to college if she wants to.  It shows her there are all sorts of resources out there to help her.  Samantha attended the program's first session and afterwards talked to me about how she is so excited about the Go On Program because she wants to go to college and get an education and have a good job.  She said she doesn't want to end up like her mom, brother and sister.  Samantha is a great kid and will do great things with the help of the Boys and Girls Club.

YWCA School Supplies Drive Gears Up

Oh no, say it ain't so! Seems like the summer has hardly begun and already the YWCA is talking school supplies.  For the past decade the YWCA has headed up a drive to collect community donations of new school supplies for families who can't afford to buy their children what they need to start school.

Last year, because of your fabulous help, the YWCA was able to supply 872 children with all or some of their school needs. They are once again asking you to buy extra supplies when you are out shopping and bring them to the YWCA, 300 Main Street in Lewiston, or you can drop the supplies at either of their Alive After Five booths in Clarkston or Lewiston.  If shopping is not your thing, you can provide the cash and they will do the shopping for you.

This year, the distribution will be held on Friday, August 26. Items that they have always run short of include: backpacks, calculators, flash drives, pencil boxes, 3-ring binders, watercolors, markers and college ruled paper.
